Thursday, January 19th

This week, we have been reading several of Jan Brett's books.  The artwork in her books is very unique!  If you haven't read any of her books you should check them out at the library!

Our sight words this week are COME and IN.  We also continue to review all our other sight words every week.  In our literacy centers this week, we have been practicing spelling, rhyming, and handwriting as well as writing sentences.  Continue to practice saying words slowly with your child at home.  This will help students become more independent with their writing!

In math, we are finishing chapter 6.  This chapter includes numbers 10-30.  We have been talking about how to write these numbers and the difference between ones and tens.  We also review ones and tens each day during calendar time.  Today is our 89th day of school!!! (8 tens and 9 ones)  Watch for a note coming home about the 100th day of school.  We need some parents to volunteer materials for our activities for that week.

This week we have also been talking about different polar animals.  We have been discussing a different animal each day and recording facts on a class chart.  So far, we have learned about polar bears, penguins, and seals.  Ask your child what facts he/she remembers about these different animals.

Reminders:
Next week we have an EARLY RELEASE day on Wednesday.
Library day is Tuesday - PLEASE be sure your child has his/her book so everyone can check out a new one!
The weather has been very cold lately.  Be sure your child is properly dressed for two 20 minute recesses every day!
Don't forget to send shoes with your child for inside the classroom.

Happy New Year!!!

I hope everyone had a relaxing holiday and winter break.  I am happy to be back into the swing of the school year.  I was so happy with the way our class came back after the New Year.  Everyone has been great listeners and hard workers this last week.

This month, we are talking about mittens, snowmen, and Jan Brett books.  Last week we made snow people and wrote short stories about them.  We also reviewed all the sight words we have learned so far this year.

This week, we are learning the word DO.  We practice making words at many different letter centers.  We are taking time every day to read books from our book bins with a partner or on our own and Mrs. Skeels has started to take guided reading groups.  We are also writing a lot more each week and are practicing handwriting.

In math, we have started chapter 6 which looks at numbers 10-30, graphing, and other review.

Things to practice at home with your child this week:
*Review ABC and AABB patterns.
*Have your child write from 1-30.
*Review your child's sight words with him/her.
*Have your child read to you every night from his/her book bag.

Tuesday, December 13

This week we have been talking about holidays in December.  On Monday, we discussed Christmas and made Christmas trees and stamped wreaths using green peppers.  Our new sight word is IT, so we made a class book using the word it.  We made a paper "present" and hid a toy beneath.  Then we wrote clues so that our classmates could try and guess what was inside the present.  It was a lot of fun!

Today we have been learning about Hanukkah.  We read a book and watched a short video clip about the history of Hanukkah.  Then, we made a menorah and played the dreidel game.  We also made a book for our book bin drawers about socks!

Later this week, we will be learning about Kwanzaa, Las Posadas, Divali, and Ramadan.  We will be making projects for each holiday, so be sure to check them out when your child brings them home!

Our new sight word for this week is IT.  Please review all our sight words with your child at home!

Tuesday, December 6

We have been very busy in kindergarten since my last post!  We have been reading many different versions of The Gingerbread Man.  We have started making a journal about the different gingerbread stories we have read.  We compare the characters, setting, and ending of each story.  It has been a fun unit!  Other gingerbread activities that we have done include measuring our jumps and our height using gingerbread cut-outs, measuring the perimeter and area of a gingerbread, tasting gingerbread and doing 5 senses activities, making a class graph, making a book bin book, making a gingerbread glyph, and doing simple addition problems using a pan and "gingerbread" cookies.  We have also bee practicing the words you and can over the last two weeks.  We have done a lot more writing in the last couple of weeks and I have been so impressed with the way that everyone is sounding out words and using kindergarten spelling!!!  We are going to continue to practice leaving spaces between words.

Later this week, we will be doing a science experiment about things that dissolve in water and will be making our own gingerbread houses (from lunch bags) and doing several math activities with these.  I hope we have a great time!

Next week we will be studying winter holidays around the world.  We hope to see you and your friends and family at the Holiday Sing next Thursday at 1:30 at the EPAC!

Reminders:
*Return your library book every Tuesday!
****Please be sure to send a hat and mittens with your child every day as well as a warm, winter coat.  We go out for two long recesses every day and it can be very cold and windy on the playground.  Snow pants and boots are also good for warmth and will be necessary once it snows.

Check out the new pictures in the slide show!  These are from some of our activities in the last couple of weeks!
