Presidents' Day

We learned about some past presidents and our current president during the week of Presidents' Day. Ask your child to tell you some facts about George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Barack Obama. We made a book with pictures and facts about these men that came home last week! This week we have been working on our dinosaur research project. In the computer lab, we went onto the Dinosaur Train website to look up information about what each dinosaur eats and uses for protection.  We are learning about money in math.  Counting different coins (penny, nickel, dime) is a little tricky, so we appreciate your help at home! During writing time we have been working on writing our first stories. Most of the kids in our class are just about finished and are ready to design a cover. After we share the stories here at school, we will bring them home to share with you!
Reminder: We have an early release day this Thursday for conferences.
ALSO, we have collected our first 500 box tops!!!! Thanks for your help and please continue to send in your box tops! We have collected another 85 towards our next goal of 500.

February 18

We have been very busy in kindergarten over the last week and a half!  Last week, we learned about Chinese New Year.  Emma K brought in some special coloring books and red envelopes with chocolate "money" to help us celebrate!  She had some fun experiences to share with us as we read stories about this holiday.  Our class was excited to hear about this holiday and to get the special gifts from Emma!

We continue to learn many more things about dinosaurs.  There are lots of interesting websites and clips online that we have been using for our dino research.  We learned about how fossils are made and were able to "excavate" chocolate chip fossils from cookies last week.  This week, we have examined dinosaur skeletons and tried to make our own skeletons out of noodles.  Pictures will be coming soon!  Later on, we will be making our own dinosaur fossils using a coffee clay recipe.    Our dinosaur notebook is quickly filling up!  We can't wait to share it with you once we are finished.

Thank you for all who contributed to the valentine treats last week!!!  We had enough treats to last us a few days! :) We had a great day passing out valentines, opening them together, saying "thank you," and making a book from all the valentines.  Thank you for all the work you did making the valentine boxes and addressing the valentines.  The day was very special for everyone.

This week in centers, we are listening to stories on CD, practicing our guided reading books, looking at/reading dinosaur books, doing word work with all our sight words, practicing rhyming, and writing lists, letters, and recipes!  We continue to practice new books at school that your child will bring home to practice with you during the week.  Thank you for taking time to listen to your child read.  They are so excited to share their books!

Reminders:
We are getting closer to our box top goal of 500.  For every 500 box tops we collect, our class receives a gift card for $25!  Thank you all for helping!

No school this Friday.

Spring Pictures are coming soon.  If you would like your child's picture taken, please return the form to school!

100th Day

We had a great day yesterday on the 100th day of school!!!  Thank you all for sending in your 100 collections and snacks.  We spent lots of time in the morning comparing the collections.  We also rotated to different centers in other kindergarten classrooms during the morning for some fun 100 activities.  In the afternoon, we made a structure with 100 cups and then drew pictures of them.  Hanging in our hallway are 100-year self-portraits and a 100 questionnaire.  Check them out if you get a chance!  I also loved the elderly kindergartners that joined our class for the day!  What a fun day!

Some of the 100-year-old folks who joined our class
Natalia had the heaviest collection.
These were the lightest collections.

Counting out 100 snacks
Ryan and Elijah lay out 100 noodles.
Seth puts his Q-tips into a line.
Adam's cupcake liners make a LONG train!
Some of our other collections
These four had the shortest collections!
These were the 3 longest collections!
After our comparisons, we glued our collections onto paper jars.  We compared the jars to see how full each one was.
More yummy 100th day snacks
This is the tower we built together.  Check out our drawings that came home tonight!

Thanks for reading and have a great night!!!!
P.S.
This photo is old, but we have collected more than 300 box tops!!!  We are close to earning our first Target gift card.  Please ask your friends and family to help collect more box tops.  We can continue to earn additional gift cards for the remainder of the year!  Thanks for all your hard work so far. :)
