Spring Flowers

These are some pictures of the spring flower project we made today. We also painted the flowers. I will take a picture of the bright and cheerful display in the classroom. Hopefully all these April showers really will bring May flowers!

More Mo

These are some pictures of the pigeon stories that we wrote with a partner and the Knuffle Bunny stories and illustrations we started. We had so much fun drawing pictures of the pigeon and making pictures of Trixie and Knuffle Bunny using Mo's art techniques. The Knuffle Bunny stories are amazing. I am trying to figure out how to make these into a book so that each child can bring a copy home! I am so proud of the writing our class is doing!

Addition

In math we have started a chapter on addition. This week we wrote and illustrated our own addition stories.

Seeds

Here is an updated picture of the seeds we planted in CD cases. These are so cool!! The kids enjoyed watching the seeds open, send down roots, and sprout. We are able to take a close look at all the plant parts this way too!

Mo Willems

This week during our Mo Willems author study we took a close look at the punctuation he uses in his stories. We wrote different types of sentences just like Mo!

Plants and Mo Willems

Over the last few weeks, we have been studying Mo Willems books during our literacy block.  We have read TONS of Piggy and Gerald, Pigeon, and Knuffle Bunny books as well as some of Mo's other books that aren't as well known.  We have spent time writing in our Thoughtful Log about Mo's books.  We also worked in partners to write our very own Pigeon stories!  They were very creative and funny and I loved seeing how the groups worked together to make decisions about their stories.

In science, we have been learning about plants, seeds, the earth, the water cycle, and ways to keep the earth healthy.  We have made a science table where we can explore the different seeds that we have planted.  This is a favorite during center time!  We have also been very busy writing in our science notebook about all the great things we are learning.

In math, we have started chapter 11.  In this chapter, we will be practicing addition.  Everyone is very excited about this chapter since we have been practicing addition all year.  We have some fun addition projects to do with this chapter and we will continue to practice simple addition facts.  You can practice these at home with your child, too!

Last week, we were able to go to the EPAC on Friday to see a Dr. Seuss play (Seussical) performed by kids from our school.  It was amazing and our class loved watching it!  What a great experience!

Here are a few pictures from our room:

These are some navy bean seeds that we planted in a CD case.  They sprouted very quickly and are now growing out the top of the cases.  We can see how the roots, stem, and leaves grow through the CD case.

These are the different seeds that we planted.  They are all different!

We are trying to grow a potato plant, but it isn't doing anything yet!

We planted some seeds in cups.  Three of the cups have sprouted.  We are still waiting for the rest!

Healthy Foods and April

Before spring break we learned about the different food groups and about healthy food choices. Our class made placemats with a healthy meal and listed all their foods next to it. They were such fun to make and they turned out great!

During the month of April, we will be doing an author study on my favorite children's author, Mo Willems. We have read several of his pigeon books this week and have started writing and illustrating our own pigeon stories! He uses tons of different punctuation marks to tell his stories, so we have also talked a lot about punctuation marks.

We will also be learning about the earth this month. We will be talking about seeds, plant parts, weather, clouds, water, and the three Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle). I am excited for this unit!
